I have more than three decades of experience researching and presenting American art and material culture.

Over the course of my career, I have produced scholarly publications and organized blockbuster exhibitions. I am passionate about engaging museum visitors with objects and surprising them with unexpected narratives. My recent projects have focused on uncovering the stories of artists and makers whose achievements have been obscured.

After more than two decades serving as curator of decorative arts at the New-York Historical Society, I was named vice president and museum director, a post I held from 2015 to 2023 before deciding to return to full-time curating. Overseeing a vast and varied collection, I developed a wide-ranging expertise and versatile curatorial practice. My exhibitions and publications have embraced topics ranging from New York stoneware and handmade Black dolls to Tiffany lamps and early American silver.
